Discover the art of lino cut printmaking in this beginner-friendly workshop. Unleash your creativity as you learn the step-by-step process of designing, carving, and printing unique linoleum block prints. In this workshop you will learn:

Step 1: Introduction and Materials

- Start the workshop by introducing yourself and giving a brief overview of lino cut printmaking.

- Show examples of lino cut prints to inspire participants.

- Explain the materials needed for the workshop, including linoleum blocks, carving tools, ink, brayers, paper, and a barren or spoon for hand printing.

Step 2: Designing and Transferring the Image

- Encourage participants to brainstorm and sketch out their design ideas on paper.

- Provide linoleum blocks and demonstrate how to transfer the design onto the block using transfer paper or by tracing the design directly onto the block.

- Assist participants in transferring their designs and offer guidance on simplifying the design for easier carving.

Step 3: Carving the Block

- Instruct participants on the safe and proper use of carving tools.

- Demonstrate basic carving techniques such as outlining, removing background areas, and adding texture.

- Encourage participants to start with simple shapes and gradually progress to more intricate details.

- Provide one-on-one guidance and feedback as participants carve their blocks.

Step 4: Ink Application

- Explain the process of inking the carved block using a brayer and ink.

- Show participants how to evenly distribute ink on a flat surface and roll it onto the carved block in a thin, even layer.

- Discuss different color options and encourage experimentation with color combinations.

Step 5: Printing the Block

- Demonstrate the printing process using a press or by hand printing with a barren or spoon.

- Show participants how to place the paper on the inked block and apply pressure to transfer the inked design onto the paper.

- Assist participants in achieving consistent and clean prints by providing guidance on ink application and pressure.

Step 6: Finishing and Clean-up

- Instruct participants on how to carefully remove the printed paper from the block without smudging the print.

- Discuss options for adding additional details or layers to the print, such as hand-coloring with pencils or watercolors.

- Provide guidance on cleaning the tools and materials used, emphasizing the importance of properly cleaning the carving tools to maintain their quality.

Note: This workshop is designed to be beginner-friendly, providing a supportive environment for participants new to linocut print-making.

About the Artist:

Jyotsna is a print making artist based out of Bangalore, India. She is also a mixed media artists and specialises in various Mixed Media Art Forms.
